The city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur was named as one of the new seven wonder cities in the world.

New7Wonders Foundation president and founding member Bernard Weber led a ceremony held at St. Paul Cathedral where he handed a bronze plaque to Vigan Mayor Eva Grace Singson-Medina, signifying the heritage city’s election as one of the world’s wonder cities.

Vigan will join alongside Havana in Cuba, Beirut in Lebanon, La Paz in Bolivia, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Doha in Qatar and Durban in South Africa.

Over 3,000 Vigan residents spilled into Plaza Salcedo to watch the conferment in front of the cathedral.

Weber said the Philippines is the only country to have three wonders—namely: The Puerto Princesa Underground River in Palawan had earlier made it to the Seven Natural Wonders list, Ifugao Rice Terraces as an original wonder, and finally the City of Vigan.

Weber also credited the Filipino community for the “fantastic motivation and stimulation to vote” for propelling Vigan into the prestigious list.
